HELIX

A new image resource for mining historians in higher education.

What is HELIX.

HELIX (the Higher Education Library Image Exchange), is a project spearheaded by De Montfort University. HELIX provides on-line access to a vast collection of high quality images for university and college students, lecturers and researchers to use for free in their work.

What is in the HELIX resource for mining historians.

The resource comprises a number of collections. Two of which currently contain a range of mining images, predominantly 20th century and orientated towards coal mining.

For example -

The Social & Political History of Britain includes two images of Pleasley Colliery at the end of the General Strike in 1926.

'The Pleasley Colliery in Derbyshire, back in operation after the General Strike.' Dated 17th November 1926

'Work recommences at Pleasley Colliery after the General Strike.' Dated circa 1926

'At Irthlingborough mine in Northamptonshire an Eimco loader shovels iron ore at the rate of one ton a minute which is more than double the daily output per man.' Dated 5th June 1948.
